Overleaf ~ a sonnet of surprise
(written on a train to London)
Each one of us is curled within a leaf:
We see with eyes much greened by nature’s self
And yearn for so much more than mortal’s brief.
We search and sing to write on future’s shelf,
Amassing wealth and knowledge on the way.
Some gain a stature overbrimming death,
With reputation famed e’en to this day.
What is the truth and nature of this breath?
We first must breathe a risk beyond the air
And lose ourselves whate’er the cost may be –
Yet find a spirit’s meaning, fresh and fair,
Our leaf bound self and world could never see.
Let’s rise and dance, dive off the leaf we own,
Into the joys of everything unknown.
