The heart of all matter ~ a sonnet of love
(written on a train and in an Ibis Hotel in London at breakfast)
We’re given sight but blind to nature’s praise,
Our human path is shared and never ours –
As formed in dust we have a song to raise
Though self–possessed and blessed with many powers.
We sing alone estranged from earth and sea,
Like gods we sit on thrones and claim the right
To rule o’er all and take the owner’s key:
Exploiting, laying waste, imposing blight.
A song goes on below our busy noise
As mountains, rivers, birds and beasts sing, too,
Of glory, wonder, awe – creator’s poise
Beyond all meaning, turning why to who.
It’s always time to learn anew our part:
Through prayer where mind is met and changed by heart.
