The dissembler's sonnet
The sheep and wolf are warnings to us all
As those who pray and prey on those they think
Are rivals and as such are doomed to fall
By gossip, lies and so to envy’s brink.
Betrayer’s kiss speaks surface love and care:
Oh see how much I love you, dearest friend,
But feel the chill of steel – your heart will tear
As you are conquered and your threat must end.
For so it is in every place and age
That treason smiles whilst wielding dagger’s thrust,
Dissembler’s cloak makes cool the seething rage
And covers hatred’s bile, securing trust.
This life reveals that some we trust as true
Are master’s of self’s pride and heartless coup.
