the flag and the shell

a sandy beach and that urge
to dig and delve to build a castle
by the sea below dry grains the
tide drenched clay to rise in walls
and mound with turrets and
adorning shells perhaps a flag to
own with pride the achievement
of heart’s joy – all held by ocean
its waters binding these fragmented
rocks so too our lives our worlds
the familiar and the forgotten never
ours or mine remember the inevitable
tide the flood that makes us one
